so what?
What happened to traditional jazz after Miles 60′s quintet?
The question is undoubtedly one of the most commonly shared inside the so-called jazz community, in this case meaning exactly – is there anything new? – or still – did you hear anything that you could classify as a more modern way of playing? Think that Nefertiti was recorded in 1967 and to be true, every time I listen to it my feelings are that it could really have been done yesterday.
1. The way they play is totally and finally driven by being attached to the pure melody, the pauses are more part of the creative process than the notes themselves.
2. The interplay is complete, no one is featuring himself forgetting about the others, otherwise everyone is involved inside the same walk respecting each others’ individuality revealing the entire group character.
3. Tempo, sound and harmony are conceived more than actual, modern and complex chord substitutions, contrapuntal lines and polyrhythms are at the base of the entire work.
So what after that? In my opinion Miles himself after that enlighted period did not do anything but responding the laws of marketing for the rest of his life. To me, the only way to find something really new in the last 50 years in jazz is to look for groups that worked in the direction of mixing up different ethnicities and cultures (Oregon for ex.) that seems to be probably the only way to make this music survive, but what about the traditional jazz? Probably nothing.
